Acting Assistant Adjutant-General, First Division:

CAPTAIN: The foraging party that left these headquarters this morning was attacked by a band of guerrillas, and in the skirmish Captain Burrage Rice was killed and one private wounded. The body of Captain Rice was recovered and brought to these headquarters. The train was brought through in safety loaded with forage.

GENERAL: The general commanding the corps desires me to request that you will at once cause the woods in front of the picket-line of the division to be slashed, and where the line crosses the open field the chain of sentinels be protected by an abatis.
