Hello All,

Being an Australian, the American Civil War did not feature very highly in my everyday thoughts, however recently a mate of mine lent me the DVD "Gods and Generals". Hooked!

Magnificent, tragic and complex, on so many different levels.

Since then, I have been greedily consuming everything I can on the Civil War. And buying books faster than I can recharge my credit card!

In other words, I am very new to your interest/hobby, so please excuse my ignorance.

I am currently trying to get my head around the Confederate uniforms which appear (from my perspective at least), to be a complete dogs breakfast.
Could somebody please explain to me if ever there was a period during the war, when Confederate Infantry wore the brass Infantry horn/bugle attached to the top part of the grey forage hat? Please note, forage hat, not the Kepi. In photos, I only see the forage hat bare - no insignia at all.

Now I am sure some of you die hard Civil War buffs will smirk at my silly question, unfortunately, I just don't know and it is really bugging me.

I thank you in advance for taking the time to read my question and I look forward to not only hearing from one or possibly two of you, but participating in this most worthy pursuit.

Take care,

James:confused:

yeah the confederates really didnt use any insignias or anything on their hats like the Union did. The confederates had enough trouble with uniforms for their soldiers so they didnt really worry about little things like that. The more you learn about the CSA, youll see that they were outgunned, outmanned, etc but their will to win was very high, hence they were able to survive for as long as they did. Most countries wouldnt have been able to sustain under such conditions as the rebels did.
