I am involved in researching family history. I am tracking an ancestor who is said to have died in Cairo, Illinois about 1862. Does anyone have any hints about how to go about searching for him--where is buried. I have two documents which place him in hospital in Cairo as a prisoner of war. The family story is that he was shot for being out after curfew. I presume he was on the Confederate side, he lived in Caldwell county, Kentucky before the war. The documents do not give any rank or information about his military standing. Is it possible he was not actually fighting? could he be a pow if he was a civilian?
How were the dead "handled" and what records should I look for?
Thanks for any help.
