The sectional rivalry between North and South began because of the unsuccessful attempts made by the U.S. political system to satisfy either fo the two opposing sides. The ongoing struggle was never resolved, which ultimately resulted in the outbreak of the civil war.
This is the essay i have to do for my Honors U.S. History assignment. My teacher wants me to either agree or disagree with the statement. I disagree that political system was responsible for the outbreak of the war, and i wanted to get your opinions on this statement for reference for my essay. Do you guys agree that political party could have stopped civil war or do you believe that they started the civil war?

I believe politics and politicians were a major contribution to the war. It was the partisan ways of the free soilers and the Cotton Power. Had everybody come together and focused on what was good for the country as a whole then the war may have been avoided.

politics and politicians were a major contribution to the war.
Well this is a true statement.
However there were a few underlying issues that lit the fuse, so to say.
The North had a flood of immagrants to work the factories, the south had slaves. The north had different types of industry that fed the nation, the south had cotton sold to the nation and Europe.
The issue of slavery ignited the states rights issues and from there it rolled into rebellion.

The Political parties and politicians weren't necessarily responsible for the war...but they did fail the American people. Instead of rising to the task and finding a solution, they waited too late for any real attempts at averting disaster.
An excellent overview to the political situation (as opposed to endless in-depth analysis) is Bruce Catton's "The Coming Fury." He shows the failures of the political parties...or how men failed the political system at a time which demanded the best.
