The north was industrial based. The south was agriculturally based. The federal government began gaining too much power and wanted to have all cotton grown in the south processed in the north; however, the south could get better prices overseas (England). The south didn't like being told what to do and tried to succeed. The civil war started over the right to succeed from the union. For the first year or so, the civil war had nothing to do slavery. In fact, many northern officers publicly stated that they would call a temporary truce to help put down any slave rebellions. However, the war wasn't going well so the federal government made the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves. The north was industrialized. Once they started producing more quantities of better quality artillery, the war turned for the norths favor.
