That "defeat" was the Battle of Brandy Station, and it wasn't a defeat. The Southern cavalry met their match that day against the Federal horsemen and eventually triumphed, even with high losses, but Stuart was embarrassed because the cavalry had been "caught with their pants down" and then went on a little ride with his cavalry to regain some of the honor that he felt he lost that day, and to repair his reputation. This resulted in the absence of the cavalry to report on the Army of the Potomac's whereabouts, and so to speak, started the Battle of Gettysburg on "uncertain" ground.
