That's hard to answer. I got into the Civil War over 50 years ago as a boy in Virginia. I later found out I had relatives in both armies. Later on, I had the privilege of trying to teach it in high school.

I find there are usually 2 types of Civil War person - the casual dabbler and the "Civil War nut", as my friends in Buffalo call themselves. I am fascinated by the letters and diaries, the language of the time period, the personalities, the politics, and its lasting effects upon the United states. We are still grappling with issues which the war did not totally resolve: civil rights, the role of the Federal government in the operations of the states and their citizens, the mythology surrounding its heroes, scoundrels and battles.

I have never tired of it. It's like an infectious, chronic obsession which I cannot stop researching.
