Just curious, does anyone have any favorite civil war westerns? I'm a big fan of Westerns generally and I always think it's interesting how they incorporate the conflict.

I know it's pretty silly--not to mention not very historically accurate--but I think my favorite is The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. What can I say, I'm an Eastwood fan! I found this interesting rundown on AMC: http://blogs.amctv.com/future-of-classic/2009/05/civil-war-westerns.php

But i'm sure you guys probably know more.

Much like books, this covers far too much time to actually list them all. Since the movie "Shenandoah" was mentioned, I would assume that this includes not only CW westerns, but CW movies as well.

But to appreciate a movie, one must also take into account when it was made. For example, the movie "Rocky Mountain" staring Errol Flynn (in one of his last movies) was very good. But it was made in the 50's, and watching it, this is easy to tell. (Rocky Mountain, by the way, is one of my favorites)

The Horse Soldiers is good, as movies go, and The Blue and the Gray is an outstanding mini-series, but purely a CW movie. And the truth is that after Gettysburg, it would be very difficult to make a CW movie to reach that level of excitement. Even Gods and Generals, while a very good movie, failed to measure up. I also enjoyed Outlaw Josey Whales.

As a John Wayne fan, I would have to go with "The Horse Soldiers" as well. Also, you may want to take another look at "The Duke". Most of his movies are based on post civil war era, or during the end of the war itself. For a really good one, not much on the war, check out "The Undefeated". Tells a tale of some Confederates trying to escape to Mexico, and how some ex-yankee cavalry help em out. John Wayne just makes it look better. Or even "The Searchers". Again more Indian Wars than civil war, but still the same time period. Many people tend to forget, the Indian Wars were still going on during the Civil War.
