i read in a book that there was over 10,000 big and small battles in the civil war

I believe 10,000 to be quite exaggerated. That's a hefty number. Realistically, if someone considered a skirmish that led to a larger battle as a separate incident, then it may climb (but not to ten thousand). The truth is, nobody can be absolutely sure exactly how many altercations, skirmishes, fights, battles and ambushes there were both in the north, south and out west. Personally, I think 10,000 is a bit high. I would guestimate about half that. Here is a good site that lists a good amount of battles and skirmishes. http://www.mycivilwar.com/battles/index.htm
