While one shouldn’t look at generalizations too closely. Here are two generalizations about the Civil War that I can’t reconcile.
One, there were units from every state except South Carolina on both sides in the Civil War. In the case of NC the Uniod had at least one regiment.
Two, most of the Union army was raised by the states that remained in the Union. The troops of regular army and the Marine Corps were not greatly increased during the war. As far as I know all the Confederate troops were raised by the states. There were no regular southern solders.
Question: How were the units representing states on the other side raised and officered in the Union and Confederate armies?
