I have a letter by my 2nd great-grandfather written to his father on stationary of Hospital No. 19 in Nashville on 14 July 1864. He requests that his father send a Mrs. Mary Underwood $20 in US currency. My grandfather was with Co. C of the 10th Wisconsin Infantry.

Does anyone have information on this hospital, or ideas about why money would have to be sent to there; for instance, did soldiers have to pay for services? I've searched census records for a Mary Underwood to find out if she worked/volunteered there as a nurse or administrator but haven't found anything.

Any ideas?
