Inventions?

Okay, so i have a project that i have to do for AP US History class and basically you have to make a newspaper for a certain time period, and i chose the civil war....

One of the requirements is to tell about two new inventions...

I've googled it but can't really find any good information except about war photography...

Does anybody know any other inventions that i could use?

Ironclads would an easy one. The US government also tried to create a submarine, but that did not work.

You can also talk about repeating rifles, land mines and trench warfare.
