the more i learn about the confederates the more i understand why it was nessesary to go to war
you know I am the same way, The confederates were tired of being pushed around and all they asked was to be let alone. Most of them wondered why the yankees wouldnt just go on live the way they wanna live and let the confederates live the way they want to, live and let live some folks say

I am a new member here and very interested in Freemasonry in the Civil War. Does anyone know if this has been discussed already in this forum? I would hate to duplicate something that has already been covered. Are there any other Freemasons that call this Forum home? I would love to hear from fellow Masonic Civil War buffs.

Hello!
I was out to dinner w/ friends last night and discussing history...one thing led to another about French soldiers in Civil War. There was a special Battalion of the that started with a z-I believe they had red uniforms. Does this ring a bell with anyone????

lpete, your questions will be seen by people easier if you start a new thread for the question. I think you are referencing the "Zouave"
Zouave was the title given to certain infantry regiments in the French army, normally serving in French North Africa between 1831 and 1962. The name was also adopted during the 19th century by units in other armies, especially volunteer regiments raised for service in the American Civil War.
You can read more about them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zouave

Hello,
My name is Mike and I am in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. I have done extensive reasearch on the Carolinas campaign and the small skirmishes and larger battles that were part of it. I have prepared two manuscripts, one on Sherman's Carolina's campaign and the other on the battle of Monroe's Crossroads. Both have been submitted for publication to periodicals. I have been interested in the Civil War since I took a Civil War class in high school in 1982 (part of the American History curriculum). Other than that, numerous tours to Afghanistan have taken up a lot of "free" time.

My name is Dale. I am a Civil War buff from way back! This, like most history, is a hobby for me, so I am not in any way a 'historian'. My family used to reenact the Civil War in the 90's. We were in the 3rd Va. Vol. Infantry, and sometimes galvanized as 7th W.Va. Now we live on Guam, so that is not really a hobby that is realistic for us to get back into.
I look forward to some fun, and interesting discussions here.

Hello, everyone. I'm new to this site. I've mainly been using the amazon civil war discussion forum, but I'm wanting more serious discussions. I was born and raised in Little Rock, AR; married 20 yrs; husband works for DoD in logistics; and have lived in LA, MO, Germany, MI, TX and now live in the Quad Cities area of IL. I became interested in the civil war when I started doing geneology research about 2 yrs ago. Since, I've accumulated at least 15 military files on both mine and my husband's ancestors. (His are Union; mine are Confederate.) We've visited the battlefields at Gettysburg, Murfreesboro, Chattanooga, Chickamauga and Corinth. Soon, we'll be moving to either MD or VA, so I'm pretty ecstatic over the opportunities either location will provide. Glad to be joining you!:)

Hi everyone
I really hope you don't mind and can tolerate a 'Brit' being part of your group - although obviously from a distant viewpoint I am developing a real passion for the Civil War, it's participants, heroes and scoundrels on both sides of the conflict and the unforgettable stories to be derived from such a terrible but important period in the history of your country.
I look forward to acquiring useful insights and opinions from such a knowledgeable community.

Hey Ya'll. I was researching gun powder and ran across some information that got me thinking. Can anyone tell me if there were any orders to destroy compost piles on the farms. If so, can you direct me to the liturature for research. I appreciate the help, Thanks.

Ollie, here, been following the WBTS in one form or another for the past 55 years. I've done collecting, re-enacting, now I'm into research and presentations. A couple of things I've grown tired of is studying the battles microscopically. I'm also not much into the causes of the war anymore either. That ground has been tilled way to often.
What I am interested in now is the written word of the participant. I don't mean autobiographies or unit histories written 30 years after the fact when memories are hazy. I'm into reading/researching letters written during the war and war diaries. I'm much more into the common soldier and his perception of everything. After all how many books can you read about Gettysburg or Sharpsburg. Most everyone takes the same facts and twists them to suit their needs.
Way, way long ago, the research angle of the common soldier became my path when I read the flyleaf of a diary squirreled away in the bowels of Chancellorsville visitor center. The writer's name was R.E. Wilson of the 1st North Carolina Sharpshooters. The inscription read as follows," If I ever disown, repudiate or apologize the cause for which Lee Fought and Jackson died, may the lightning of heaven rend me. May the scorn of all good men and true women be my portion. Sun, moon and stars all fall on me, if I cease to love the Confederacy. Tis the cause, not the fate of the cause that is glorious."
I was stunned when I read that quote. I copied it and still carry the quote around with me some 40 years later in my wallet. It epitomizes why I feel so much for the soldier.
