USS Shamokin, a 1370-ton Mohongo class iron "double-ender" steam gunboat built at Chester, Pennsylvania, was delivered to the Navy in July 1865, but not placed in commission until October of that year. During 1866-68, she served in the South Atlantic Squadron, mainly off South America. Decommissioned in December 1868, USS Shamokin was sold in October 1869. She subsequently became the merchant steamship Georgia.
