We have divided this section into areas of religion - faith, music, secession, slavery, and sermons from which you may read writings of the day to better understand the beliefs of the leaders and soldiers of the day. Note - some sermons are categorized, while others are not.

Religion's affect on the anti-slavery movement
|

This anti-slavery sermon was delivered by the Reverend Charles Grandison Finney in Oberlin Ohio in 1852. The Reverend Finney is often associated with the 2nd Great Awakening on the American Continent. Rev. Finney was also the pastor to John Brown, who gained fame in the Kansas/Missouri border wars as an abolitionist and was executed after raiding the federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry. |
