The other day I mentioned Abraham Lincoln in an email group and one of the people in the group came back with a tirade against Abraham Lincoln and leveled the following charges against him.. Can you please look at the charges and tell me if there is any credence to what this person is saying, or if (as I suspect) they are absolute nonsense.

Thank you for your time,

JR

Here are the list of charges.....

Sorry, I can't let the Lincoln comment stand without comment.

No president in our history ever abused his power, trashed the US
Constitution, or committed more crimes than Lincoln.

He waged a war that cost the lives of 620,000 Americans.

He suspended the writ of habeas corpus without the consent of Congress
(as required by the Constitution).

He had duly elected State representatives illegally jailed without charges.

He illegally imprisoned without warrant or trial some 13,000 Northern
citizens who opposed his policies

He illegally shut down and confiscated the printing presses of dozens
of newspapers that had spoken out against him.

He re-instated and summarily promoted an Army officer who had been
court martialed and cashiered by the US Army for war crimes.

He illegally deported a member of Congress after said congressman
criticized his unconstitutional behaviour.

He even had an arrest warrant issued for the Chief Justice of the US
Supreme Court because said justice refused to back his illegal
actions.

Chief Justice Roger B Taney ruled that Lincolns actions were illegal,
criminal and unconstitutional.

Lincoln locked up Maryland legislators to prevent them from voting to
secede from the Union, thats kidnapping.

He invaded the South without the consent of Congress as required by
the Constitution, thats a war crime.

He blockaded Southern ports without a delclaration of war, as required
by the Constitution, thats another war crime.

He imprisoned without trial, hundreds of newspaper editors and owners
and censored all newspaper and telegraph communication.

He created three new states without the consent of the citizens of
those states in order to artificially inflate the Republican Party's
electoral vote.

He ordered Federal troops to interfere with Northern elections to
assure his Party's victories.

He confiscated private property, including firearms, in violation of
the Second Amendment; and effectively gutted the Tenth and Ninth
Amendments as well.

He had his Generals attack US cities full of women and children and
burn them to the ground.

Sorry to bust your bubble there JR, but you just can not “debunk” the truth. You can call the truth “nonsense” if you like and you can believe the politically correct myth if you want (millions of Americans have for 140 years so you certainly won't be alone) but you still can not “debunk” the truth. (And every last word of this is most definitely TRUE)

Kinda makes your wonder what else your “history teachers” left out or just out and out lied to you about, now don’t it Hoss?

If you really want to start to learn the truth about “the great emancipator” go to your local library and get a copy of “The Real Lincoln” and/or “Lincoln Unmasked” by Thomas DiLorenzo. In the mean time go here and start reading (unless you are more comfortable believing the PC lies)

Booster,
The answer to your question would take quite a bit of research, but I have a suggestion.

Do a Google on "Dispatch Depot," another Civil War forum, register, and post the same message there. You will get some courteous, unbiased responses that will either answer your questions, or guide you to a resource that will.

About the only part of your inquiry I can answer without going through my own library of C.W. books, is that indeed, somewhere around 620,000 people did die in the Civil War. Assigning the blame for this to Abraham Lincoln is merely an attempt to let the South off the hook for very bad decisions made by Southern leaders.
