This guy makes me want to hang myself. I dont know where to begin...im at a loss for words. If your going to be on a CIVIL war forum, please learn to spell CIVIL right. You had it right at the bottom, till you got to "The Cival War." I pray that you get this right or Im gonna freak. And yes, people like me will do this because we care enough that you atleast spell it right.

He's the best. He's written several books on the Civil War. I've read them all and the nice thing is that you can pick and choose what you want to read, so if all you want to read about is Gettysburg, well there's a book for you!
The Civil War: A Narrative. Vol 1: Fort Sumter to Perryville. New York : Random House, 1958 (paperback ISBN 0-394-74623-6)
The Civil War: A Narrative. Vol 2: Fredericksburg to Meridian. New York: Random House, 1963 (paperback ISBN 0-394-74621-X)
The Civil War: A Narrative. Vol 3: Red River to Appomattox. New York: Random House, 1974 (paperback ISBN 0-394-74622-
Stars in Their Courses: The Gettysburg Campaign, June-July 1863
Chickamauga: And Other Civil War Stories
The Beleaguered City: The Vicksburg Campaign, December 1862-July 1863 |

Don’t go delving so deeply into what happened during the “American Civil War” (not even an accurate term) until you learn something about WHY it happened!.
“When in The Course of Human Events” Charles Adams
“The Real Lincoln” Thomas Dilorenzo _________________ "The love of money is the root of this, as of many other evils. The quarrel between the North and South is, as it stands, solely a fiscal quarrel."

My favorite author is none other than James McPherson. His Pulitzer Prize winning book Battle Cry of Freedom is a must read for anyone interested in The Civil War. _________________ Bucktail,

I suffered through Battle Cry of Freedom. I thought it was just so dry... My favorite book is "Look Away" By a Davis...I dont recall his first name, but It's about the History of the Confederacy and the Confederate Govt. It's dry, but if your really into govt. and politics, its a great book!

| I really like James M. McPherson, but if I were to recommend a single book, it would definitely be "The Gettysburg Campaign: A Study In Command", by Edwin B. Coddington. This guy really makes the entire campaign really easy to understand. He contends that Gettysburg was a crucial Union victory, primarily because of the effective leadership of Union forces, not only because Meade was the beneficiary of Lee's mistakes. I am reading it for the fifth time, and have found it to be an invaluable resource on the battle. |

I haven't long since found out this forum is open again so am late on this one.
American Kilted Yaksman, do not be put off by the rudeness of our comrades here. If you can't spell, you can't spell. My Dad was one of the most intelligent men i have ever met and he spelt 'yacht' yot!!
And i have no problems with you calling it the Cival War as it was NOT a civil war as the Southern States were NOT trying to take over the country as anyone who can read anything will understand.
If you can spell War Between the States, you might fare better on this site.
My favourite book despite everything I've read is still "Traveller" by Richard Adams.
In additon to "The Real Lincoln"by Thomas DiLorenzo and "When in the Course of Human Events", you may want to try their sequels "Lincoln Unmasked"by thomas Dilorenzo and "Slavery, Secession and the Civil War."
by Charles Adams. This last book is indepth commentary from European and predominantly British newpapers and journals of the era, as the whole diabolical business was played out!
"Lincoln Reconsidered" by David Herbert Donald is very good too.
The above books are, more or less a denouement of the masterminding that went on between the scenes, which if you really want to understand what skulduggery REALLY went on, you need to bone up on.
Good luck and Happy reading.
PS Does anyone know how I can find Nick, who posted here before it closed...(probably helped close it!!) He was an atrocious speller too.
The facility for PM's doesn't appear to be working.

Pick a battle that means something to you personally, like one that a relative fought in or one that was fought near you and start there. To me it has brought more interest in the Civil War than just picking a good book. Also make sure you study the armies involved. _________________ SoupsUp
