I agree that FOJ went too far and needs to understand how things really are. (S)he is making the North look like it's full of uninformed, as O'Bruadair said, neo-puritans.
I really think you need to apologize, FOJ. Even in our most heated debates on here, we don't resort to such lies. We use real, honest facts. You talk as though the South is full of souless killers. Even on this site you can see that isn't true. Southerners are some of the nicest people in the US, and for you to try to spread you ignorant lies is just wrong. You really need to see the error in your thinking.
Normally I'm disagreeing with O'B and bankssoldier, but on this, I'm totally with you guys. Even though we don't usually think the same things, their still my fellow countrymen and I'm going to defend them when their being wronged.

(O'Bruadair, I'm glad you defined Yankee. I think a lot of people, including myself, tend to see it as a name for the North in general. Thank's for clearing that up!)

@ All
After reading this last post I just retrieve my point 3 on my recent post.
I have hoped that fairness would be playing a role but seems not to be in his mind.

And as O.Bsy was saying this kind of temper, behaviour - or whatever you wanna call it - lets other nations think that many Americans are smug, self righteous, overbearing hypocrites and interfere in almost everything.

Fortunatelly I have some dudes in the Americas and American dudes here in Germany to know it better.

I agree, its difficult to imagine, because I am sure the Franco-Prussian War barely registers on the European radar anymore. I feel that Europeans generally underestimate Southern Pride, its closest to the pride felt in Bavaria for being Bavarian, but its not quite the same thing.

The comparison btw Bavaria and the "rest" of Germany is a good try and comes close.
If you would take Austria in that boat then it should maybe match more Razz
But honestly I would not underestimate Southern Pride indeed. Hence do we all know that in every country the South shows a bit more spiced temper then the North.
No matter if its USA, France, Germany, Italy, Spain.
In that matter I agree with you.
Nevertheless I would call it mainly a society issue in which you are moving.
No matter if you are a "hotspured" Southern hosen or a "phlegmatic" Northern pal ( a bit kidding guys Wink ), you may slip into - to express it very smooth - unwillingly seen opinions.

Europe and the United States share many similarities, but of course there are many differences as well. In the US there is a greater focus on the individual (It doesn't mean that Germans don't think of themselves as individuals of couse, but a great example is social programs, in Germany couples with a lot of children can get assistance with child care from the government, in the US if somebody told you they were receiving government assistance to raise children it would raise an eyebrow, ie. why are you letting the gov't raise your children? Raise your own kids!) This focus on the individual is important to consider because there is a 'Rebel' in all of us (ie. authority figure, f___ you)

Know what you mean, the social care structure is by far better here then in the New World.
But you have to consider that here in Germany you are paying taxes for almost everything.
- income ( 25% avg )
- VAT ( 19% )
- trades ( 10% )
- solidarity surcharge on income tax ( 5% )
- mineral oils + any form of energy
Just to list a few.
The downward trend in the birth rate here massively increases, that's why the government assists in raising kids.

Nice week guys.

Yours
CJ

Thanks COG, you are probably one of the only people in the north that respects and protects the south, maybe I'll see the north in a new way too. Twisted Evil

I am and always will be a strong union man. But I do respect all Johhny Rebs and their beliefs. I simply believe that the disecretation of The union would never had made us the Superpower we are today.

You don't have to wonder what it would be like because it would all be the same, except for the flags in southern schools. And if you think slavery would still be here today if the south would have won, then you are dead wrong. The south would have abolished slavery around the same time other countries did. I am one of the few men that wishes the south would have won, and I'm proud of that. I am also one of the few brown/black confederates because I'm 50% hispanic and 50% black. So don't think your crazy if you like the Confederacy and your dark skinned. Twisted Evil

i know that the confederacy would've abolished slavery eventually, and i too wish that the south had won, very badly, but what i meant was that i wonder if we would have some the same presidents, reacted the same to crisis situations, and things like that

I think if the south won, and in this modern time, the U.S. and the C.S. would be extremely close allies, after all we hated the British and they are probably our closest ally today. I love the south with all my heart, and I will always stand by her side, and if I was around back then, I would have fought for her, but I'm not sure that I would have wanted her to win. Having national unity has made my life the way it is, and its not too bad right now! But if a majority of the people in the south wanted it to win, I would gladly put aside my wants for the want of the majority...Its all hard to understand, but hopefully you will.

Well it really depends, we became allies with the UK because our interests converged. The question is ultimately would the interests of North/South converge or continue to diverge. Speculating on a Southern victory, you also have to speculate on tangent conflicts which could fester for years, ie. West Virignia, the border states, New Mexico, etc. Nevertheless, I think Superpower status is clearly out of the question. Instead of one great nation, I think we would've become two mediocre nations.

Of course, you have to assume that after a Southern victory that some factions in the North will favor some sort of Cuba-style embargo against the South on the theory that North/South trade is relatively more important to the South than to the North (same is true today of US/Canada trade which makes up a monumental portion of Canada's GNP, but is relatively unimportant to the US as a total percentage of GNP).

We also have to remeber that post-war the price of cotton plummets. Do falling cotton prices and a Northern trade embargo lead to the 'Compromise of 1867' whereby the South re-enters the Union and Texas splits into five states?

I'm sorry if I sounded like I was against you caster89, I thought you were a yank for asking that question. But yes, I think we would have many similarities. I think it all depends if the south would have stopped the war after defeating the north, or if it would have conquered the north and brought it under confederate control. If it had done the latter then we would have the same presidents, if not it would only have the presidents that were born and raised in the south. About how it would react in certain situations(like the 9/11 attacks) I don't think we'll ever know, but I like to think they'd act the same as the U.S. did. Twisted Evil

I will take it as a compliment if you call me a yank. I believe that it means national unity. The word is in a sense national unity. That's what the north fought for. And that's what we fight for today.

Im new to this fantastic website. I have been looking through it with much admiration.

As for this poll..... I am from Michigan but that is not the only reason I would fight for the noble Union cause. I believe that Keeping the Union together wouldbe the most important cause. Can you imagine the South as a separate country? We are a great nation today because the South is part of the United States and would not be so great today if the South was not. And slavery, I feel would eventually die out in the South but keeping the Union together, even by force, was a just and right cause. And being called a "yankee" is an honor......

Eventually the seceding states would have likely rejoined the union had the union stayed decentralized as it was drawn up to be in the constitution.

It's a question of DE-centralized government or Centralized government(like we have today).

So if a president decided to get involved in an unpopular war, like today, states would have the right to say NOPE, not us. We aren't going to be part of this.

Then if half the states decided they didn't want to be part of it, it would be tough for the president to follow through. Unless of course Bush then decided to wage war on the states that disagreed with him, which is basically what Lincoln did and pretty much was what the civil war was about.
