The reason why we americans say we are the greatest contry is our belief that all men and wemon are created equally. Another thing is our democracy. No, it wasn't the first, but, it has started a wide spread demoacracy fever you could call it. Many nations have based thier constitutions of of ours. And, almost all democarcies have been destroyed in CW. Ours did not but actually strenthend because of it. We have our faults to be sure, but, everyone has faults. I hope this was any help. _________________ A stupid man can never give more then a simple explanation of what a genius said. - Adam Harmon (who happens to be me)

Hi
The ego part is perhaps true.(definetely but dont want to offend you)
But have you ever considered, that there are a lot of countries who hold similar believes about equality, and that the U.S. had it's examples to build upon.
Also I don't mind patriottism but it seems sometimes that because f this patriotism americans ignore a lot of other problems like environment, poverty, racism and focuses to much on the wealth aspect(the amassing more of it) of the country.
And also when the united states was created it was suposedly based on freedom etc. but you slaughtered the native americans.
Furthermore but this is perhaps to farfetched, I believe man americans are christians(many are athiest as well I know) And how do gunlaws and wars and deathpenalty etc. exist while their religion gives them a very simple set of commandemants(wrong spelling sorry) that includes thou shalt not kill? |

As I said, we have our things we are not to proud of. But, if you look back to the landing of Plymouth and do some serious study of it, there is an account of the Indians attacking several men that had gone to scout the land. Indians fired first, not us. _________________ A stupid man can never give more then a simple explanation of what a genius said. - Adam Harmon (who happens to be me)

Aha, but you could argue that it was their land.
And I would. |

Mr GoatCheese,
One really good thing the Americans don't do is build canals in the tropical cities they conquer.Which then end up being festering open sewers, not so good for the mortality rate.
Probably not so good to talk in terms of national traits as it can be divisive and even harden into racism. However one national trait the Americans do refreshingly lack is arrogance. |

MC Goatcheese. I need to apologize for the somewhat hostile response I sent you. It was neither helpful nor harmonious. A little voice told me not to write it but I ignored it as I was in one of my strident moods. It was not remotely welcoming to you as a new person here.
If ever I upset anyone with inappropriateness please let me know so I can attempt to redress the balance. Sometimes I just get intoxicated by my own rhetoric but I do not bear anyone on this forum ill will. |

Don't forget though that even if our gov't isn't doing something now, it probably will be in the future b/c our gov't changes periodically and is essentially run by the people. As time goes one, we eventually get to the issues we've ignored in the past. That's another great thing about democracy.
As for the Native Americans, that's in our past. No country is perfect and all have made mistakes when they were growing.
There is no "best" country in the world. We all have our problems and we all have some level of corruption. Again, I think it's all about ego and national pride. _________________ "I want you to prove yourselves. The eyes of thousands will look on what you do tonight." -Col. Robert Gould Shaw, 54th Mass. If you really mean this saying - it gives me the creeps.
Means I stop in answering it as I could lose my self-control.

I think US is not the BEST country.
Should better ask what makes them that attractive.
Generally to mention positively is the US way of being optimistic, idealistic and have a quite good resilience in that as good as in their freedom believes.
Furthermore they are mostly quite friendly and nice people.
And as to talking in terms of business - a good understanding of service.
The large ego that *charge of glory" CoG is mentioning is very true
Unfortunatelly it let's some of its'folks thinking they are superior in many kinds.
A "very funny" part that US citizens have is a kind of slightly tendency to schizophrenia in terms of killing and christian beliefs.
E.g. shooting someone and then praying to God hoping his sins will be forgiven, because as per the Holy Bible you shouldn't do it.
Or another thing:
To say " I'm so sorry" very easily, which more often becomes an expression then really meaning it. _________________ "An evening where all attendends are agreed, is a lost evening"

| It may sound arrogant but is not intended to be. I find it difficult sometimes to reconcile the slaughter of the Native Americans and for sure slavery in this country but that is all history. Which is why we should be on a site like this one. [b]Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."George Santayana (1863-1952) |
