Hello all
First time to this site. Looks very good. I've always liked war and history but it wasn't till about 5 years ago that I truely got into the Civil War.
My wife, our dog and myself rent a cabin in PA. for a week for the past 4 years. For the last 3 years we have gone to Gettysburg. It's huge!!! And can not be truely completed in one day. Knowing that you were standing in the same plkace where two large armies fought and thousands died gave me goose bumps. The first year we did the driving tour but since we arrived late in the afternoon we rushed to get through it. The second year was in October and boy was it cold with the wind blowing across those open fields. Finally last year we were able to visit the one part of the park (Culps Hill) which we never had the time to see.
This year when we return to the cabin, we plan on driving to Antietam. I have been reading up on the events of that bloodest day. The Corn Field, Burnside Bridge, The Dunker Church and the Sunken Road (Bloody Lane).
Can anyone give me any suggestions on what to expect or places to "must" see?
After spending the day in Antietam we plan on driving over to Gettysburg to visit Sach's Bridge at night. We were there last year during a hot September day and did not have any encounters with any ghosts. That is if there really are any haunting the bridge. Hopefully something will give us a scaring.
Looking forward to reading everything on your site.

| hi i have been to gettysburg twice and antietam once. In my opion the best part about antietam is the suken road itself. there is a tower right above it that gives you an amazing view of the road itself and the hill the the union forces marched over. Also there are still some rifle pits from the georgian soldiers at Burnsides bridge which i thought were very intresting. Finally the visitor center is really great because there is a second leval with mostly glass windows that gives u an excellent view of the battle field and allows u to see everything. it is really breathtaking |

| If you are interested in Antietam you should also check out the South Mountain State Battlefield as well. It is only about 10 miles away from Antietam, outside of Boonsboro Maryland. My husband is a Battlefield Guide there. It will be very well worth your time. Also, if you are interested in the actions that occured around Gettysburg, you should check out the book I found called "The Battle of Monterey Pass." It is a very well written book by John A. Miller that talks about the retreat from Gettysburg. John also runs the Monterey Pass Battlefield Association and I logged onto their website to find that all the proceeds from the sale of his book go to having an interpretive marker put at the battlefield, which is a very admirable cause. The website to obtain info about the book is www.emmitsburg.net/montereypass. Check it out, it is definately worth it! |
