If you mean the first shots fired by a Southern State it was 3 rounds of artillery, fired by South Carolina cadets at the “Star of the West” which President Buchannan had sent to supply and reinforce Fort Sumter on 9 January 1861. The first of the three was a warning fired across her bow, the next two hit her. She then turned and sailed out of the harbor.
This did not result in a general war at the time because Buchannan simply did not desire a war. Lincoln on the other hand deliberately provoked the South into firing on Sumter three months later so that he would have an excuse for the war that he wanted. _________________ "The love of money is the root of this, as of many other evils. | Fort Sumter. Honest Abe did not want a 'Mr Lincoln's War' so he made sure that the Confederacy attacked first. Genius. |
