Post subject: State still has unclaimed Civil War medals.
Nearly 4,000 Civil War service medals produced in 1866 for veterans who served in West Virginia units, including two companies of the 45th U.S. Colored Infantry, remain unclaimed. Three types of medals were issued by the state — one for good-conduct discharges, one for those who died of illness or injury, and one for those killed in action.
