Post subject: Why U.S. is the best
It is not that we think that we are the best, but a national pride that has been formed by the whirlpool of immigrants and Native Americans. Many people do not understand the American way of thinking, It is based on many people of diverse backrounds who can put aside differences for a common good.
Even when these diverse groups have shown antipathy towards one another (North and South for instance) Americans have always been willing to reconcile.
Another factor is that Americans are the most giving people. A great example would be my uncle. Dallas Jamieson was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne division during WWII. On D-Day he jumped into France, not because of his disire to see Frenchmen free, but because it was the spirit of a great democracy to use our sons and daughters to help others.
I think that you might understand it better when you realize that on my uncle's second jump he was killed in the tiny village of Beek, just outside Nijmegen. Perhaps he was proud to liberate the Dutch people or perhaps he was fighting to get back to America to have a cold beer, whatever it was America showed its willingness to help others.
One last item. Our Constitution is one of the greatest blueprints for forming a goverment and granting us the right to tell our leaders to drop dead since 1787.

Post subject: American Patriotism
I know one of the main reasons that I love this nation is our history. We have gone through more in our nearly 250 years as a country that many nations have in their entire centuires of existence. We won our right to live in the free world, beat the greatest empire in the world at the time twice, expanded our lands "from sea to shining sea", united the nation after a bitter civil war where both sides had reasons to fight and faults, became the deciding factor in WW1 and showed the world in WW2 that we were not to be messed with. To me, that is something to be proud of, and thats just the military fact of it. I could go on about yankee ingenuity and our cultre but that would take too long,
. And if anyone from other nations feels this blind pride that many Americans have is arrogance, im sorry. It's not. It is simply our patriotism for everything we have been through and the harships and victories we have experienced together as a nation. Despite issues like education problems in some regions, corruption, scandals, odd laws, and sometimes careless diplomacy, it is something every nation experiences, not just the US exclusively and we our doing our best to right our wrongs, improve the nation, and better the world.

I love this country beacuse it has many weak spots in its southern border, and my five children and i have found a wonderful life in San Diego, where i work as a onion picker for $5 an hour. Although i dont have the documentation to get a real job, i feel this country, especially jorge bush, are accepting of my situation.

Why do We feel our Country is the Best Country?
How sad it would be to live in a Country that you feel is not the best. I would say that we feel that way because of Pride and Love for our Country. If I did not feel that this was the best Country, I would seriously be looking to move to the one I did consider to be the best.
I am not saying this country does not have problems, but I love it warts and all.

Why are we in Iraq? I'll tell you why...Becuase it puts us on the backdoorstep of China AND Russia ! Why is this important ? Because China is waiting to start a war with the US. Haven't you notice all the bad press that China has been getting? The cintaminated pet food, the lead in children's toys , to name just a couple.
ILLINIOS has been gearing up for war for the last 10 yrs. Why do you think Boeing moved their company Headquarters to Chicago ? Because they liked the view off Lake Michigan?!!! No, it's so they don't get bombed into oblivian . The expansion of O'Hare Field, is not to get bigger jumbo jets in... more like C130's and troop transports. Every major road leading in and out of Chicago and her suburbs has been widened. For traffic conjestion ? How about Tanks and artillery.
Navteq moved to the Chicago area recently. They are a GPS guidance company. Caterpillar, Eaton Vance, Nalco, Tell Labs, Archer Daniels Midland.I realise that you are young and tend not to look at the bigger picture. But before you begin to complain about this or that... First ask the question why ? Who stands to gain ?
Bin Laden wasn't captured, because he is our excuse for being in the mid east. Allowing us to put troops in to thwart China and Russia. If they move towards war, we will already be in place to fight them. That's why we are in the Middle East. AND you won't read about this in any history books either.

Post subject: Re: Why do Americans claim the U.S. is the best country?
Hello
I am dutch, and i believe the U.S. has many strong points as well as weak points as do a lot of countries.
But Why is the U.S. the best country?
We Americans claim we are the best because nobody ever wants to mess with us.
But i agree with you, we do have strong points as well as weak points.
Strong point-we fight hard at first but (weak point) after a while we just sorta get tired of the war and we dont fight as hard as when the war first started.
I dont see why we dont just nuke all of iraq and be done with them, and instead, we take pity on our enemies, and thats another weak point. Our soldiers are being tried for murdur when they atack a citizen of Iraq. When you go to war with another country, you dont take pity on them- you kill them all.
Ithink we are a great country and all, (hey, ive lived here all my life!) but we have more weak points than strong points, and i may be a girl, but im going to become president of the United States of America some day, and try to fix all our weak points- ilegal immegration, our war strategy, Americans in dept., etc. I may be 13, but i have some good ideas for our country.
-sorry if i got off topic!

Post subject: Because the USA is the best country!
It may sound arrogant but is not intended to be. I find it difficult sometimes to reconcile the slaughter of the Native Americans and for sure slavery in this country but that is all history. Which is why we should be on a site like this one. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."George Santayana (1863-1952)

If you really mean this saying - it gives me the creeps.
Means I stop in answering it as I could lose my self-control.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I think US is not the BEST country.
Should better ask what makes them that attractive.
Generally to mention positively is the US way of being optimistic, idealistic and have a quite good resilience in that as good as in their freedom believes.
Furthermore they are mostly quite friendly and nice people.
And as to talking in terms of business - a good understanding of service.
The large ego that *charge of glory" CoG is mentioning is very true
Unfortunatelly it let's some of its'folks thinking they are superior in many kinds.
A "very funny" part that US citizens have is a kind of slightly tendency to schizophrenia
in terms of killing and christian beliefs.
E.g. shooting someone and then praying to God hoping his sins will be forgiven, because as per the Holy Bible you shouldn't do it.
Or another thing:
To say " I'm so sorry" very easily, which more often becomes an expression then really meaning it.

Don't forget though that even if our gov't isn't doing something now, it probably will be in the future b/c our gov't changes periodically and is essentially run by the people. As time goes one, we eventually get to the issues we've ignored in the past. That's another great thing about democracy.
As for the Native Americans, that's in our past. No country is perfect and all have made mistakes when they were growing.
There is no "best" country in the world. We all have our problems and we all have some level of corruption. Again, I think it's all about ego and national pride.

MC Goatcheese. I need to apologize for the somewhat hostile response I sent you. It was neither helpful nor harmonious. A little voice told me not to write it but I ignored it as I was in one of my strident moods. It was not remotely welcoming to you as a new person here.
If ever I upset anyone with inappropriateness please let me know so I can attempt to redress the balance. Sometimes I just get intoxicated by my own rhetoric but I do not bear anyone on this forum ill will.
