Description: Gen. Robert E. Lee concentrated his full strength against Maj. Gen. George G. Meade’s Army of the Potomac at the crossroads county seat of Gettysburg. On July 1, Confederate forces converged on the town from west and north, driving Union defenders back through the streets to Cemetery Hill. During the night, reinforcements arrived for both sides. On July 2, Lee attempted to envelop the Federals, first striking the Union left flank at the Peach Orchard, Wheatfield, Devil’s Den, and the Round Tops with Longstreet’s and Hill’s divisions, and then attacking the Union right at Culp’s and East Cemetery Hills with Ewell’s divisions. By evening, the Federals retained Little Round Top and had repulsed most of Ewell’s men. During the morning of July 3, the Confederate infantry were driven from their last toe-hold on Culp’s Hill. In the afternoon, after a preliminary artillery bombardment, Lee attacked the Union center on Cemetery Ridge. The Pickett-Pettigrew assault (more popularly, Pickett’s Charge) momentarily pierced the Union line but was driven back with severe casualties. Stuart’s cavalry attempted to gain the Union rear but was repulsed. On July 4, Lee began withdrawing his army toward Williamsport on the Potomac River. His train of wounded stretched more than fourteen miles.
Results: Union victory

Yes, it was a tragedy, but that doesn't mean that it can't be interesting. Maybe he likes military strategy, or finds the politics of that time to be interesting, or likes learning about the causes of the war. The French Revolution is pretty interesting, and lots of people died in that too.

Plenty of history is interesting, and in it plenty of people have died. It's sad, but it doesn't really change anything.

many people died in many battles, smart one. If we didn't have the revolution, we wouldn't be here. If HItler would have won, the world we be very different. Perhaps you should realize that death is a part of life, and people have their own views and opinions.

This was the war of brotherhood. Little know that the South was backed by Britain to regain the Colonies. And it was also a war that provoked Pres. Lincoln to start a monetary provision backed by silver and not by gold as the First Bank of The United States distributed. Hence, when the war finalized and Pres. Lincoln did not want to abolish the Greenback, because he saw how well its citizens were staying out of debt, and being secured, he was [censored][cens ored]inated.
Brothers and blood were killed in this war, but it continued Liberty. Liberty is what we live for today, stand by it!

uhmm... the civil war definately had to do with slavery. the whole reason the south suceeded from the union was because of slavery. they thought that when president lincoln was elected, he would ban slavery, so they got up and left. get YOUR facts straight.

of course slavery had something to do with it...but the bottom line is the Govt was spitting all over the constitution and rights that were given to all and the South decided to fight for what was right. Lincoln violated more laws then any other president in history to cause and fight this war. You should learn alil ore then what the Northern slanted text books have taught you.

Everyone calm down...

The reason Lincoln went to war was because the South seceded, and he wanted to keep the Union together. He didn't really care about slavery that much until half way through the war when the started to do Union well and he could get away with doing something about slavery. It wasn't his original focus though, or his main one. Lincoln said: "If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that." See? Union was his primary focus.

The South seceded over state's rights and slavery which were pretty much highly connected.

The Civil War was fought to keep the Union together, and it had been split because of state's rights + slavery. It certainly did have to do with slavery, but the war itself started because Lincoln wanted to maintain the Union.

i agree but it wasn't just about slavery it was about beliefs. Lilcion invited general lee to fight for the union but he turned the offer down because he was from pensilvania.

You people make me sick i would just love to argue about this but i won't just to let you all know this war wasn't just about slavery but it was about beliefs. General Lee was invited to join the union by Abe Lincoln but Lee turned down the offer because he was from Virgina and refused to face Virgina in the Civil war. See I know about General Lee.

Need I remind all that the South didn't lose every issue. We now have self rule in each state that gives use the right to make our own laws, we have the right to maintain our own Army [the National Guard]. Lincoln made the war about slavery when he signed the Iman[censored]t ion Proclaimation. We could go on and on but what we need to do is remember what we were willing to do to preserve what we thought was right. That is something we should never forget...Thank you.

FYI if you didn't know, we would be nothing now if we didn't have the past. The past is what makes us the present. I have a feeling that you will argue my point, but the fact still stands. Sometimes, the past is better than the present, and we like to remember that.

Student!!! get your facts straight...The war was over states rights which yes included slavery....but the slaves were not freed until 1863...Lincoln only did this as a way to gain support in a war he was losing and deservingly so for the way he trampled and spit on the constitution!!! !

I beg to differ, the South felt that the Federal Government did not have the right or authority to tell the individual States what they could and could not do. Many of the Confederate leaders had freed or were in the process of freeing their slaves, many of the soldiers who fought for the Confederacy were to poor to own slaves, they were fighting against what they viewed as oppresive intervention that went beyond the scope of the powers granted by the Constitution..

What the heck student. I'm studing the Civil War in school right now and the Civil War started out as fighting because of Goverment reasons. The south had secceded from the Union and Lincon said they couldn't and thats what led to the Civil War. Fighting for slavery didn't start until the Emancination proclomation took place in the Confederate States of America. Get you'r facts strait!!!!!!

There is something that i have to say. To all those people that find the civil war fascinating, and to all those that think they are sick because of that, hear me out. Just because someone is intrigued by the civil war, DOESNT mean that they are sick. They simply find the aspect of a war between the states interesting. It doesn't mean that they agree with slavery if they would have taken the Confederate side. General Robert E. Lee himself did not agree with that practice, yet fought for the Confederacy because he could not fight against his home state Virginia. I personally love the Civil War. It in my mind, is the most intriguing war that has ever occured. Yes, there war very many deaths, and that is very sad. But remember, the people fought for what they believed in. They would rather have died on the field of duty than in some prison where they were of no use. I beg for y'all to reconsider the opinion that everyone who finds the Civil War fascinating is a sick minded pervert.
