| Description: |
Gen. Robert E. Lee concentrated his full strength against Maj. Gen. George G. Meade’s Army of the
Potomac at the crossroads county seat of Gettysburg. On July 1, Confederate forces converged on the town from
west and north, driving Union defenders back through the streets to Cemetery Hill. During the night,
reinforcements arrived for both sides. On July 2, Lee attempted to envelop the Federals, first striking the Union left
flank at the Peach Orchard, Wheatfield, Devil’s Den, and the Round Tops with Longstreet’s and Hill’s divisions,
and then attacking the Union right at Culp’s and East Cemetery Hills with Ewell’s divisions. By evening, the
Federals retained Little Round Top and had repulsed most of Ewell’s men. During the morning of July 3, the
Confederate infantry were driven from their last toe-hold on Culp’s Hill. In the afternoon, after a preliminary
artillery bombardment, Lee attacked the Union center on Cemetery Ridge. The Pickett-Pettigrew assault (more
popularly, Pickett’s Charge) momentarily pierced the Union line but was driven back with severe casualties.
Stuart’s cavalry attempted to gain the Union rear but was repulsed. On July 4, Lee began withdrawing his army
toward Williamsport on the Potomac River. His train of wounded stretched more than fourteen miles. |

Go Civil War!!!!!
what is wrong with u!!!??? lots died in this battel
Plenty of history is interesting, and in it plenty of people have died. It's sad, but it doesn't really change anything.
Brothers and blood were killed in this war, but it continued Liberty. Liberty is what we live for today, stand by it!
of course slavery had something to do with it...but the bottom line is the Govt was spitting all over the constitution and rights that were given to all and the South decided to fight for what was right. Lincoln violated more laws then any other president in history to cause and fight this war. You should learn alil ore then what the Northern slanted text books have taught you.
The reason Lincoln went to war was because the South seceded, and he wanted to keep the Union together. He didn't really care about slavery that much until half way through the war when the started to do Union well and he could get away with doing something about slavery. It wasn't his original focus though, or his main one. Lincoln said: "If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that." See? Union was his primary focus.
The South seceded over state's rights and slavery which were pretty much highly connected.
The Civil War was fought to keep the Union together, and it had been split because of state's rights + slavery. It certainly did have to do with slavery, but the war itself started because Lincoln wanted to maintain the Union.
people die all the time so forget the past and think about the present.
uhmm... the civil war definately had to do with slavery. the whole reason the south suceeded from the union was because of slavery. they thought that when president lincoln was elected, he would ban slavery, so they got up and left. get YOUR facts straight.
I beg to differ, the South felt that the Federal Government did not have the right or authority to tell the individual States what they could and could not do. Many of the Confederate leaders had freed or were in the process of freeing their slaves, many of the soldiers who fought for the Confederacy were to poor to own slaves, they were fighting against what they viewed as oppresive intervention that went beyond the scope of the powers granted by the Constitution..
